Chevrolet Volt Named Among “Top Products of 2010"

Calling it nothing less than a "brilliant idea," the team at Popular Mechanics recently honored the 2011 Chevrolet Volt as one of its "Top Products of 2010."

The key for the prestigious publication? The Volt's innovative powertrain, which delivers up to 50 miles of emissions-free-and anxiety-free-electric driving. It's like this: With other electric vehicles, when you're out juice, you're out of luck. But if the Volt's batteries are depleted, the car's efficient 1.4-liter gas engine kicks in to act as an on-board electric generator that can power the Volt for up to 260 more miles. And as Popular Mechanics notes, the transition between engines "is remarkably smooth (it's nearly impossible to discern on the road)."

Also receiving kudos from the magazine were both the Volt's striking and aerodynamic exterior, and its high-tech user interface. The former leverages a sloping rear hatch, flat bottom and a variety of "small creases and fins" to create what Popular Mechanics call "GM's most aero-efficient cars since the EV1." In fact, GM said that the extensive wind-tunnel work that went into creating the Volt helped contribute 8 miles to the vehicle's electric-driving range and added about 50 miles to its extended range.

As for its technologically advanced driver interface, the Volt boasts two 7-inch WVGA displays, including one with touch-screen functionality, to provide access to a wide range of the Volt's basic operations. But that's just a small chapter in the Volt's technology story. The car was specifically designed to take advantage of the latest cutting-edge vehicle technologies, like a Chevrolet-developed app that lets drivers control key Volt functions by using their smartphones.
The bottom line for Popular Mechanics: "The Volt is more than the sum of its cutting-edge parts: It's a dramatic reinvention of the great American car, without sacrificing the great American road trip."
